How to Stop Procrastinating When You Feel Overwhelmed

How to Stop Procrastinating When You Feel Overwhelmed

When everything feels urgent, nothing gets started. You look at your list, feel a wave of pressure, and end up doing something else entirely. Overwhelm is one of the most common reasons people procrastinate, and the fix is not to try harder, but to make things smaller and clearer.

Project, task or next action?

A lot of overwhelm comes from mixing these up:

  • Project: something with many steps ("sort out my finances").
  • Task: one part of a project ("set up a budget").
  • Next action: the very first physical thing to do ("open my banking app and write down my balance").

You can't "do" a project. You can only do next actions.

The three-column method: capture, clarify, start

  1. Capture: write down everything on your mind, without organising it.
  2. Clarify: for each item, write the next physical action. Cross out anything that doesn't really matter.
  3. Start: choose one action and begin it for five minutes.

Limit today's list

Choose one to three meaningful actions for today. Hide or fold away the rest of the list. Seeing everything at once is what creates the overwhelm.

Quick overwhelm reset checklist

  • Take three slow breaths.
  • Brain-dump everything onto paper.
  • Circle the one action that would make today feel better.
  • Remove one distraction.
  • Start for five minutes.
